| A - The first person that sees or becomes aware of a person over board ... Immediately ... SHOUT .. MAN OVER BOARD! to alert all on board. | |

B - The first person to spot
the man in the water ... STAND AND EXTEND YOUR ARM AND POINT
AT HIS POSITION IN THE WATER. Continue to do so regardless
of which way the boat turns… |
| C - THROW A DEBRIS TRAILl - life vests, floatation devices, (Its a good idea to keep bright colored cushions in the cockpit for this purpose) | |
| D - Start the engine and drop the sails. | |
| E - Work together to Rescue overboard victim. | |
| F - If any serious injury occurs or if the victim is not breathing, perform CPR and call for emergency help using the VHF radio or cell phone. Keep emergency numbers available. | |
NOTE: This all takes place at the order of the captain. It is imperative that everyone obeys and reacts immediately to the orders of the captain. Remember, safe recovery of the person overboard is the priority. When all work together as a crew, this can be accomplished. The conditions will determine how to handle each situation. Although procedures may vary from boat to boat, all have the same objective: THE SAFE RECOVERY OF THE PERSON OVERBOARD! |

| Mechanics of the Boat | |
| A - Point out the various parts and rigging of the boat that could cause injury or problems. Example, jib and jib sheets flapping in the wind, being knocked over board by the boom, getting hand caught in a winch, etc.. | |
| B - Instruct someone on how to start the motor. One having any general knowledge of engines, outboard motors etc. How to raise and lower the outboard and how to start it. If they are unfamiliar with outboards, give them a crash course in how to operate the motor. | |
| C - Familiarize everyone with the VHF radio, emergency first aid kit, flare gun, fire extinguishers, life vest. | |
| D - Carry on board a bound leaf notebook that contains proper radio procedures and how to hail someone on the radio in the event of an emergency. Encourage all to browse through the pages. This all takes place before casting off. Once under way allow passengers to become familiar with the handling of the boat. |
